Lenox, MA at a Glance
Located in the heart of the The
Berkshires, just a few hours from the metropolises of New
York City and Boston, the village
of Lenox was once a popular summer retreat for America's wealthiest citizens during
the 1800s. As a result, Lenox is bursting with stunning mansions that showcase
the former grandeur of the town. Lenox continues to charm visitors today with
its festivals and outdoor recreation. The
Mount Estate and Gardens of Edith Wharton, a Pulitzer Prize winning novelist,
is open to the public and is just one example of Lenox's stately homes. Lenox
is not lacking for entertainment, as the Boston
Symphony Orchestra spends its summers at Tanglewood
and hosts musical performances regularly. The Tanglewood
Jazz Festival occurs every September and features nationally and internationally-renowned
jazz musicians. For outdoor fun, the Pleasant
Valley Wildlife Sanctuary encompasses 1,500 acres (600 ha) and offers beaver
viewing, hiking and canoeing activities.
